“I am honored to have the endorsement of the Yarmouth Fire Department Local 2122. Proven, effective leadership is much needed on Beacon Hill and I look forward to being a strong voice and advocate for the Yarmouth Firefighters and Paramedics.  All of our public safety professionals are vitally important to ensure the people of Cape Cod and the Islands always feel safe and secure in their community” said Schiavi. “I have lived on Cape Cod for the past 24 years, spending two decades of my military career at Joint Base Cape Cod, serving our nation, and commonwealth, and vow to continue my support for our public safety professionals and first responders on behalf of the residents, visitors and businesses on Cape Cod and the Islands in the state senate. I am grateful to have the confidence and support from the members of Local 2122” said Schiavi.

Schiavi—a retired Brigadier General with a distinguish 30-year career in the U.S. Air Force, first Executive Director of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), now known as Joint Base Cape Cod, and a former Town Manger and Police Commissioner—has pledged to generate strong, sustainable job creation and growth, as well as ensure more local aid to Cape Cod communities.

Boston Herald Editorial Board Endorsement

Cape & Islands — Anthony Schiavi has about the most impressive resume ever for a legislative candidate. A former brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force, a town manager and police commissioner in Ashland, Schiavi is the real deal for an open seat in this district. His expertise in homeland security and public safety would surely be a plus, as would his commitment to increasing drug treatment options and access to rehab facilities for those addicted to opioids. But most of all he would be a sensible voice against the Senate’s never-ending propensity to raise taxes.

Opponents Connecting Dots That Don’t Exist

Schiavi Denounces Democratic Claims About Jobs First

Harwich – October 26, 2016 - Tony Schiavi, a Republican running for State Senate for the Cape & Islands, is not associated in any way, nor is his campaign, with the PAC Jobs First. It is illegal for a campaign to coordinate with such a PAC or have any communication with such an organization.

PACs like Jobs First, as all Republicans, Democrats and newspaper reporters and editors should know, are protected by State Law, and are required to operate completely independent of any campaign or candidate.

A statement from Tony Schiavi:

“I clearly do not, and would not, agree with or condone personal or offensive attacks against any candidate for public office,” said Schiavi, retired Air Force Brigadier General, and former Police Commissioner and Town Manager. “One only needs to look at my campaign; it is issue and experience based, and I plan to keep it that way. I would denounce any such attacks.”

“A case in point is a recent Jobs First mailer, supporting my candidacy. The fact that the mailer stated that I was running for State Representative, not State Senator, speaks directly to the fact that Job’s First acts independently. It’s frustrating for candidates like me, and others, because you can’t control their message.”

“Yet outgoing State Senator Dan Wolf, Jay Cincotti Executive Director of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, the Cyr Campaign and the Cape Cod Times all tried to connect dots that don’t exist. Dan Wolf also questioned my integrity, which is insulting at best.  Shame on them.”

“More to the point, Democrats are lying to the media and to the voters by suggesting that I accepted money from Jobs First. Again, that would be illegal. I have not accepted any money, or anything of the sort.”

“A reporter for the Cape Cod Times wrote in his story that I declined comment, when, in fact, I did comment, and the reporter quoted me. That is a far cry from no comment and an untrue statement.  I find it ironic that the newspaper does not report in any detail the fact that my opponent has received PAC support, including in part mailers, from the powerful Democratic-based SEIU union and the Massachusetts Teachers Union, and that in his Primary Election he hired an expensive Indiana opposition research firm to smear his Primary opponent, a tactic his opponent called ‘dirty tricks to win an election.’

“My opponent also failed to take on a leadership role when one of his supporters attending a recent WXTK debate, chose to insult and minimize my combat service because I flew as a decorated Air Force fighter pilot above the ground and did not walk on it. I thanked the veteran for his service, and expressed my appreciation that he made it home safely.  My opponent, in the meantime, stood by and did and said nothing. That speaks volumes.”

Schiavi Outlines Plan To Ensure Public Safety And Build Safe, Healthy Communities

Schiavi Outlines Plan To Ensure Public Safety And

Build Safe, Healthy Communities

HYANNIS -- Today, Cape & Islands state Senate candidate Brig. Gen. Tony Schiavi (ret.) released his comprehensive public safety action plan. The plan outlines Schiavi's top legislative priorities for the Cape and Islands and the Commonwealth in the area of public safety. Schiavi will outline the plan at an event with local law enforcement leaders and Sen. Bruce Tarr at the Michael K. Aselton Memorial Park in Hyannis at 2:30PM.

"As a retired Brigadier General, I know how important it is to have elected officials who have the right priorities when it comes to keeping our residents safe and secure in their communities," said Tony Schiavi. "From tackling the opioid crisis, to solving the homelessness problem, to ensuring our communities stay safe, I'll be committed to working every day to advance a public safety agenda that works for Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket."

In its endorsement of Schiavi's candidacy during the primary, the Boston Globe said "Schiavi has a stronger record of tackling complex local issues, and has well-thought-out approaches to homelessness and treating opioid addiction."

Schiavi's plan is outlined below:

TACKLING THE OPIOID CRISIS

Most residents on Cape Cod and the Islands know someone who has been affected - either directly or indirectly - by the opioid epidemic, and it is incumbent upon our leaders to find solutions to this critical public health and safety issue. Our region in particular has been hit hard by this crisis. The bipartisan bill introduced by Governor Baker and enacted by the Legislature to limit prescriptions and support prevention education is a great first step. It's up to our next state Senator to continue this work and deliver more resources to fighting this crisis.

Crack Down On Drug Trafficking: Last year, the Legislature failed to deliver funding proposed in the Governor's budget that would have provided resources for local law enforcement to crack down on heroin trafficking. We need to ensure the state budget provides cities and towns with the resources they need to solve this problem.

Access To Treatment Beds: The next state Senator should work with key stakeholders to emulate models like ASAPS (Addiction Support And Placement Stat) which is being proposed to expedite the process to get addicts access to treatment and work to get longer term treatment beds established on the Cape and Islands.

Improve Treatment Options: Pursue legislation that would expand health insurance coverage for opioid treatment from 14 days to 30 days

Innovative Local Strategies: Right here in our backyard, Sheriff Cummings and the team at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s are leveraging solutions like the use of Vivitrol to move addicts into the recovery phase prior to release. These solutions need to be championed, reproduced elsewhere and receive sustainable funding.  Work to establish a regional lockup facility that will better support local departments and save resources.

HOMELESSNESS

After Lt. Governor Polito requested a plan for tackling the homelessness crisis in Hyannis, Tony Schiavi worked with local community and public safety leaders to develop a plan to tackle the issue. The plan - focused around the Permanent Supportive Housing model that has proven successful in other states, including Massachusetts - is a key first step in ensuring the revitalization of Hyannis as a safe, thriving tourist destination.

Click here to read more about the plan

SAFE COMMUNITIES

Tony Schiavi will work hard every day to ensure our Cape Cod and Islands communities are safe and thriving places. As state Senator, Tony will work with stakeholders to ensure our communities have the resources they need to keep our citizens safe.

Standing Against Sanctuary Cities: A clear contrast in the race for state Senate: Tony Schiavi wants to work with local communities to ensure we're not creating dangerous sanctuary cities on Cape Cod and the Islands and the underground economy that often results, hurting legitimate businesses and straining public resources. It's important to ensure we have full cooperation between local law enforcement and immigration officials. Tony supports Gov. Baker's policy change to allow state police to coordinate with ICE to keep us safe.

Standing Against Drivers' Licenses For Illegal Immigrants: Another clear contrast in this race: Tony Schiavi supports Gov. Baker's efforts to ensure illegal immigrants cannot obtain drivers' licenses, while his opponent's position on this is at best confusing, and at worst dangerous for our communities.

Giving Law Enforcement The Tools They Need: Tony will pursue efforts to strengthen law enforcement's ability to crack down on drug dealers and other dangerous criminals - like enhancing wiretapping laws as some legislators have suggested.
